The first glimpse of the new Cats film has landed, giving an insight into what we can expect when the film hits cinemas at the end of this year.

The long-running musical is being adapted for the big screen by Tom Hooper, the man who brought Les Misérables, The King's Speech and The Danish Girl and features a super impressive line-up of actors too.

Idris Elba will play the baddie cat, Macavity, Taylor Swift stars as Bombalurina and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Grizabella (so will be singing 'Memory' which will undoubtedly slay).

Rebel Wilson, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, James Corden and Jason De Rulo will also star in the film.

On Wednesday, Universal released a video of the rehearsal footage for the film, showing Swift and Elba learning dance routines and then practising together, Beyoncé's hip-hop dancers Les Twins learning choreography and Dame Judi Dench speaking about the legacy Cats has left on her.

'This musical is timeless,' renowned cat-lover Swift says in the video. 'We've got to update in ways that I just think are so great.'

It's been wondered how the upcoming film - which comes out in December - will take form, for example will it just be the actor's voices through animated or CGI cats? Not exactly, no.

Real actors (so Swift, Elba, Hudson etc) will appear in the film, but as cats through incredibly sophisticated technology. Sounds confusing, but the idea is explained in the backstage video.

The film set is on a much larger scale, too, so that the human actors will appear cat-sized and then the audience can view the surroundings in the film from a 'cat perspective', Elba notes.

Can't get enough Cats news? Well you're in luck. We'll know more when the trailer drops on Friday.

We can't wait. Anyone for some Cats-based karaoke in the meantime?
