Phoebe Waller-Bridge spoke about how reassuring it was that 'a pervy, messed-up woman' could resonate with US audiences when she stole the show at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night. And that sentiment has since been reaffirmed, as the award-winning Fleabag creator has just signed a TV deal with Amazon, reportedly worth around £16 million a year.

According to Variety, the deal means Waller-Bridge will create and produce new television content for Amazon Studios that will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

'I'm insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon,' Waller-Bridge said in a statement. 'Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of. It really feels like home. I can't wait to get going!'

Waller-Bridge picked up six awards for the hit BBC series at the Emmys, which included Outstanding comedy series, Lead actress in a comedy, and Writing for a comedy series.

'We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Phoebe at Amazon Studios! As evident in her great success at the Emmy Awards this week, she is clever, brilliant, generous and a virtuoso on multiple fronts including writing, acting and producing,' Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios in a statement.

'Fleabag has been a gift to our Prime Video customers and we are excited for what comes next from this brilliant mind to dazzle and delight our global audience.'

Responding to the show's success, Waller-Bridge's co-star Sian Clifford described the star as 'the love of her life' in a post on Twitter.

Fleabag, which was originally adapted from Waller-Bridge's one-woman play, ended after season 2. Speaking backstage at the ceremony, the star joked: 'Even though it's so nice to hear that so many people loved it, it's like: "Oh dammit, maybe I shouldn't have waved goodbye". But it does feel right to go out on a high.'
