Reese Witherspoon has opened up on her 2013 arrest with husband Jim Toth where she was after she was pulled over by police on suspicious of driving under the influence.

The Big Little Lies star was handcuffed on a charge of disorderly conduct after she refused to stay in the car while her husband was given the 'walk-and-turn' US field sobriety test. Hollywood agent Toth pleaded guilty to a first offence DUI.

'Do you know my name?' Witherspoon is quoted as asking the state trooper who stopped the couple in Atlanta. The actress appeared on Good Morning America two weeks later to apologise for her behaviour.

In a new interview with Jameela Jamil on Jamil's I Weigh podcast, Witherspoon has described the incident as 'so embarrassing and dumb'.

'You apologised and shamed yourself in a way that was so f***ing refreshing to me,' Jamil told Witherspoon, to which the Hollywood actress replied: 'But, I did something really stupid.'

She later added: 'It was so embarrassing and dumb. But, you know what... turns out I breathe air. I bleed the same way. I make dumb decisions. I make great decisions. I'm just a human being.'

The pair also discussed mental health, with Witherspoon revealing she first sought therapy for anxiety when she was 16.

'I definitely have anxiety, my anxiety manifests as depression so I would get really depressed,' she explained. 'It's like my brain is a hamster on a wheel and it won’t come off and I've been managing it my entire life.'

The star concluded that mental health issues are 'very treatable', but it's crucial to detach the stigma that surrounds it.

'Anything that people can do to de-stigmatise it,' Witherspoon added.
