Meghan Markle and Prince Harry confirmed on Sunday February 14, otherwise known as Valentine's Day, that they are expecting their second child together.
In a sweet statement, accompanied by a beautiful photograph of the Sussexes relaxing in a garden and Meghan cradling her visible baby bump, the couple shared how 'Archie is going to be a big brother'.
'The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child,' a spokesperson for the couple said.
The announcement came on the evening of Valentine's Day which, of course, is sentimental in itself as the heartwarming news fell on the day in which traditionally love is celebrated.
However, royal watchers and commenters soon found additional significance attached to the day the Duke and Duchess of Sussex chose to share their happy news.
In 1984, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the late Princess Diana announced she was expecting her second child with Prince Charles - who, of course, would then become Prince Harry - on February 13, 1984. As we didn't have the internet back then, the statement reached newspapers for their Valentine's day front pages the next day.
An archived news report from the publication service UPI from February 13, 1984 reads:
Princess Diana is expecting her second child in September, Buckingham Palace said today in an announcement that eclipsed reports of the new Soviet leader in British newspapers.
The announcement said only that a second child would be born to Diana, wife of Prince Charles, in mid-September.
Palace officials said, 'Both Prince Charles and Princess Diana are delighted by the news, as are the queen, Prince Philip and all the members of both families.'
Prince Harry was later born to Diana and Charles on September 15, 1984. The Duke of Sussex was just 12 years old when his mother died in a tragic car accident in Paris in August, 1997.
Prince Harry, now 36, often pays tribute to his late mother both through his charitable endeavours - like his work with children affected by HIV and Aids or walking in the footsteps of his mother through a land mine in Angola - the Diana award he continues to champion with his brother Prince William and more subtly, like choosing a diamond which belonged to his mother and using it in the design of his engagement ring with which he proposed to his wife.
Further significance in Meghan and Harry's announcement include the setting of their black and white photograph, in which Meghan rests her head on her husband's legs as he sits down in front of a billowing tree, taken remotely by their friend Misan Harriman.
The photographer, who took the photo of the couple at home in California through his iPad from London, told Vogue the 'tree of life behind them and the garden [represents] fertility, life and moving forward'.
Following the couple's announcement, Buckingham Palace said the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and 'the entire family' were 'delighted' with the couple's news.
