With the royal baby reportedly due in a matter of weeks, fans of the Duchess of Sussex have been showing their support for the mum-to-be by donating to charities in her honour.
The fundraising is part of a social media campaign called #GlobalSussexBabyShower, which was launched by fan account @freepeeper on Twitter. Last week, the account called on users to mark Mother's Day by donating to some of Markle's favourite charitable causes and it quickly sparked a flurry of considerate fans to get behind it.
'We're kicking off a global fundraiser on Sunday, 31st March in honour of #BabySussex and the compassion and altruism of The #DukeandDuchessofSussex,' the post read. 'We've selected three charities to benefit in this effort. Tweet your donations and include the hashtag #GlobalSussexBabyShower'.
In the days since it launched, the campaign has been a hit. According to CAMFED, a campaign for female education, it has been 'floored' by the amount of donations it received because of #GlobalSussexBabyShower.
The other two organisations involved were Mayhew, an animal welfare charity that Markle became patron of in January, and Well Child, a charity that provides care for young people with serious illness. Well Child told royal correspondent Chris Ship it had received around 100 donations and raised £2,000 and counting since the online baby shower started.
All three charities, plus others including the Invictus Games Foundation, have taken to Twitter to thank those who have donated. Many others have pointed out that the campaign highlights how social media can have a positive impact.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not shared the due date of their first child, but Kensington Palace said the couple were expecting the baby to be born in spring 2019 when the news was announced.
