Meghan Markle reportedly read a heartfelt poem about love and marriage during friend and british fashion designer Misha Nonoo’s wedding to energy entrepreneur Michael Hess last Friday.

The Daily Mail reports that the Duchess of Sussex personally chose to read out British poet Roger McGough’s poem ‘Vow’ during the ceremony, in front of attendees including her husband, Prince Harry, but also Karlie Kloss, Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry.

The poem is a well-known verse read out at weddings given its focus on promises to make a commitment through bad times and good. According to the publication, the royal was the only guest to have been invited to give a reading at the wedding.

The poem reads:

I vow to honour the commitment made this day
Which, unlike the flowers and the cake,
Will not wither or decay. A promise, not to obey
But to respond joyfully, to forgive and to console,
For once incomplete, we now are whole.

I vow to bear in mind that if, at times
Things seem to go from bad to worse,
They also go from bad to better.
The lost purse is handed in, the letter
Contains wonderful news. Trains run on time,
Hurricanes run out of breath, floods subside,
And toast lands jam-side up.

And with this ring, my final vow:
To recall, whatever the future may bring,
The love I feel for you now.

This isn’t the first time the 38-year-old has shown a love for the work of British wordsmiths.

In September, Meghan shared her ‘personal favourite’ poem written by author Matt Haig titled ‘A note from the beach’ in her September Issue of British Vogue. The poem first appeared in Haig’s 2018 memoir, Notes on a Nervous Planet.
