Justin Timberlake has made a public apology to his wife Jessica Biel and family, a couple of weeks after pictures of him surfaced with his co-star Alisha Wainwright.

In November, the singer and actor was photographed drinking on a night out in New Orleans with the cast of his upcoming film Palmer. In several pictures and videos, it appeared as though Timberlake was holding hands with Wainwright and in others, the actress appeared to be resting her hand on his knee.

The pictures made global tabloid headlines and, now, the 'Cry My A River' singer is addressing them for the first time.

In a statement posted to his Instagram account on Thursday, the 37-year-old said that while he usually refrains from commenting on 'gossip' he felt the need to address these most recent rumours which are 'hurting the people I love'.

'A few weeks ago I displayed a strong lapse in judgement,' the former N*Sync boyband member wrote. 'But let me be clear, nothing happened between me and my co-star. I drank way too much that night and I regret my behaviour.'

Timberlake then proceeded to address his 'amazing' wife of seven years, Biel, and his family directly, apologising for 'putting them through such an embarrassing situation'.

'I should have known better,' he admitted, frankly. 'This is not the example I want to set to my son.'

Affirming that he will be focusing on being the best husband and father to his four-year-old son Silas, he said he was proud to be working on his current film and was looking forward to its release.

Biel, so far, has not responded to either the pictures or her husband's apologetic statement.
