Princess Charlotte today paid subtle tribute to her great-grandmother the Queen at Her Majesty's state funeral.

The seven-year-old daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the newly appointed Prince and Princess of Wales, offset her black mourning clothes with a diamond brooch in the shape of a horseshoe.

Her choice of accessory was a nod to Her Majesty's love of horses.

The Queen was known for her love of horses and horse racing and owns over 100 horses. She reportedly had her first riding lesson at three and at just four years old, the Queen was gifted a Shetland pony.

Famously, when she was young, the late Queen was asked by a reporter what she'd like to be when she grew up, and she replied, without hesitation: 'I should like to be a horse.'

The Queen also owned myriad winning horses and footage recently resurfaced of her running to the on-course balcony to see a horse she had bet on, winning the time-honoured Epsom Derby.

Princess Charlotte and her brother Prince George, nine, joined their parents to walk behind the Queen's coffin today ahead of Her Majesty's funeral service.

As for Princess Charlotte and the Queen's bond, royal fans have continually said they resemble each other, and they have previously been seen sharing a twinning moment.

During the Platinum Jubilee, which celebrated the Queen's 70-year-reign, Her Majesty made a surprise appearance at the Jubilee pageant - the event concluding the four-day celebration.

After the Queen greeted the crowd gathered below with a signature regal wave, the only daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales quickly joined the 96-year-old in a royal wave.

Princess Charlotte appeared to take initiative after years of observing her great-grandmother at royal appearances.

The special moment happened after the Queen, who'd been absent from festivities since June 2, greeted the crowd from a Buckingham Palace balcony, along with her eldest son, now King Charles III, and his wife Camilla, the newly appointed Queen Consort.

Prince Charlotte's mother Kate Middleton also paid tribute to the Queen at the state funeral today with her choice of jewellery.

The new Princess of Wales wore two pieces that had once belonged to her grandmother-in-law.

She wore Bahrain pearl drop earrings and a four strand pearl choker with a centre diamond clasp from the Queen's personal jewellery collection.

Her Majesty wore the choker for a state banquet in Bangladesh in 1983, and the Bahrain pearl drop earrings were a gift to the Queen for her wedding to Prince Philip in 1947.
