Sir Elton John paid an emotional tribute to the late George Michael as he performed in Las Vegas last night (December 28).

The singer was performing in Vegas for a series of New Year concerts when he dedicated the song 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' to Michael, who passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Day.

Originally co-written and released by Elton in the '70s, the single found a second bout of success when a live version recorded alongside George was released in the 1990s. Their duet reached No.1 in both the UK and US charts.

A fan who attended the concert revealed to the Daily Mail that as Elton delivered the tribute he told the crowd: "I only wish George was here to sing it with me."

Calling the performance "very emotional", Chris Stacey said: "There were thousands of us in tears...

"After he sang for George, he turned his back on the audience and was shaking and looked like he was crying. I was in tears and so was everyone around me."

Adding that there "wasn't a dry eye in the house", Stacey said the audience gave "a standing ovation" before the singer was reportedly consoled by a band member before continuing.

Sir Elton, who was a long-time friend of the Wham! frontman, led the tributes to Michael after news of his death broke – and is even rumoured to be performing at the star's funeral.

"I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. RIP George Michael," he wrote.
