The number of Americans who think President Donald Trump should be impeached has reached a new high.

Forty-three percent of voters want Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday. Just last week, that number was at 38 percent.

That number is edging closer to the percentage of people who don't want Congress to start the impeachment process. That group stands at 45 percent.

According to the poll, most voters who want Trump impeached don't necessarily think he's guilty of impeachable offenses — such as treason, bribery, or obstructing justice — that the Constitution requires. It reflects the country's acute partisan divide: 71 percent of Democratic voters support impeachment, while 76 percent of Republicans do not.
