When it comes to booking a summer break when you're on a budget, you probably make a call before you even start looking that long-distance trips are out of the question.

You're going further, so the flights will cost more, which will make the whole holiday pricier, right?

Well, maybe we shouldn't be so quick to discount holidays further afield, especially when some breaks in Europe can be pretty eye-wateringly expensive themselves.

In fact, according to TravelSupermarket, it is actually cheaper this year to book a holiday to Thailand, Bali and even Orlando than it is to go to Ibiza or Menorca.

The price comparison website looked at all the major components for booking a holiday - flights, hotels, car hire and even travel insurance - and found that these long-haul destinations are more accessible than some places you can reach by plane in under three hours.

In fact, the brand found that a holiday to Orlando from the UK for a family of four is a huge £1240 less (more than a third) than the equivalent holiday to Ibiza. Two weeks in Phuket is also a third less than the price of a holiday to Menorca.

Emma Coulthurst, travel expert for TravelSupermarket, said: "People may think that their holiday budget can only stretch to the Med, that they can't afford long-haul and that holidays are going to be more expensive this year due to volatile exchange rates. But the reality is holiday package prices are lower this year in some locations and there are bargains to be grabbed, which provide the opportunity to experience long haul lovelies for less".

And it's not only flights and hotels where savings can be made. "The cost of living is also, on the whole, a lot cheaper in places like Bali and Thailand than it is in Spain" Emma adds. "A three course meal in a mid-range restaurant in Bali or Thailand will only set you back around £7-8 and a pint of local beer about £1.20 to £1.60. So, you can save more when you get there too."
