The aftermath of Sunday night's Las Vegas shooting has brought out stories of human tragedy, but also breathtaking human heroism. Most of the latter tales have come out of the concert crowd or from emergency personnel who rushed to the scene, but Mandalay Bay security guard Jesus Campos is being hailed as a hero for confronting shooter Stephen Paddock, and helping lead police to him.
Campos, who was unarmed, went to Paddock's room on the 32nd floor of the hotel to try and stop him from firing. Paddock had reportedly rigged up cameras all along the hallway and also on his door's peephole, and when Campos approached and reportedly tried to open the door, the shooter hit him in the leg. The guard was the first person to reach Paddock's room; the elevator had been blocked, and he took the stairwell.
Despite being shot, Campos radioed casino dispatch to let them know where Paddock was. Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo later shared, "We received information via their dispatch center ... that helped us locate where this individual was sequestered."
Even after he'd called in help, the wounded Campos stayed on the floor helping police evacuate guests. In a statement to ABC News, he shared, "I'm fine. I was just doing my job."
