Emily Ratajkowski has been accused of plagiarism by swimwear label Lisa Marie Fernandez.
Business of Fashion reports that Fernandez sent a cease and desist letter to the actress and model following the launch of her new swim brand, Inamorata. The document focuses on two of Ratajkowski's designs - an off-the-shoulder bikini and a strapless swimsuit with knotted detailing - which Fernandez claims look very similar to her Leandra and Triple Poppy styles, both launched three years ago.
While there are few copyright protection laws in the US, the actress does sell internationally to Europe. With this in mind, Fernandez invoked two European Union Community Design Registration certificates that she registered in May 2015 which gives to supply, import, export or deal in products incorporating the designs within the EU until 2020, after which point she can apply to extend that registration.
"Because of technology, we are really entering an era of accountability in so many ways," said Fernandez, who noticed the design similarities on Instagram.
Fernandez's designs are hugely popular among fashion circles and also celebrities, with fans including Sienna Miller and Kendall Jenner. The brand has given Inamorata until 22 November to respond to her letter, before it starts legal proceedings.
