Summer might be upon us but with the weather the UK has endured in recent months it's no wonder our bodies are craving a hot roast dinner soaked in gravy and buttery potatoes.

Whether you’re a lifelong vegetarian or a Yorkshire-pudding-till-I-die kind of person, Sunday roast is a weekend staple, and London has a lot to offer in terms of trimmings, luxurious décor and gravy galore.

From traditional pubs, such as Alexa Chung-approved The Royal Oak on Columbia Road, to Michelin-starred Spanish restaurant Sabor, there really is something for everyone when it comes to the most important meal of the weekend.

Even better, if you're a big group of friends you can tuck into bountiful sharing plates on the menu at The Marksman - pot roast Tamworth belly with sausage and baked beans anyone?

If that's left your mouth watering, here's our pick of the best spots to spend a long afternoon chowing down on a plateful of gravy-soaked food at Coal Rooms in Peckham or trying out a Sunday roast with an Indian twist at Brixton's Kricket.

There really is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The Harwood Arms

Head to Fulham this weekend and you’ll find London’s only Michelin-Star Pub, the Harwood Arms. With a focus on the best of British produce, game and wild food, you can expect to taste the most delectable roasts from this eatery. After tucking into a Venison Scotch egg and Berkswell cheese tart, we suggest ordering a roast for two (sharing is caring, remember?). Roast options include a slow cooked roe deer shoulder, loin and jowl of pork, a sirloin of belted galloway, Cornish Monkfish or a veggie cauliflower roasted in goat's butter. Accompanied by Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, hay baked carrots cauliflower and greens we imagine you’ll be stuffed for days after visiting the Arms.

Roast

Roast in Borough Market

The name is a giveaway, and it doesn’t disappoint. Located in the heart of Borough Market, you’re not going to get your classic oldy-worldy pub vibe here – the light-filled dining room overlooks the market below - but what you do get is the option of a roast any day of the week, which we're into.

Sourcing a lot of their ingredients from the market, all the classics are served up with their rightful accompaniments – pork belly with apple sauce, roast sirloin topped with a Yorkshire and creamed horseradish and roast chicken with sage and onion stuffing and bread sauce.

And if you’re looking for your roast fix on the go, head ten minutes down the road to Roast’s brand new location situated in Mercato Metropolitano, where you can get your roast stuffed into a sandwich or as a handheld platter.

Address: The Floral Hall, Stoney St, London SE1 1TL

The Orange

If sustainability is a high priority for you, The Orange on Pimlico Road has you covered. Awarded a Three Star Sustainability Rating (which is champion levels of sustainability, FYI), you get a true farm to fork experience here.

And as for what’s on your fork, we love the sound of gathering our best mates together and tucking into the salt march lamb shoulder for four, followed by a hearty slice of Bramley apple pie complete with pecans, salted caramel and vanilla ice cream.

With a cosy ‘proper pub’ vibe, park yourself next to the roaring open fire for ultimate Sunday roast goals.

Adam Handling Chelsea

Come one, come all and visit Adam Handling Chelsea which serves the best Sunday roasts your eyes and stomachs can dream of. Starting at £50 per person, the Sunday Lunch menu consists of hearty delights all served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, Cornish kale and sprouting broccoli. Our favourites are the beef wellington, the roast Sutton Hoo chicken with wild garlic and the asparagus, duck egg and hazelnut option. Wash it all down with a bottle of Malbec and you’ll be wishing it was Sunday every day of the week.

The Hero Of Maida

The walls of this traditional Victorian pub are covered in handpicked artwork and antique mirrors, and the ceilings are just as ornate.

It’s the perfect setting to tuck into serving platters heaving with thick slices of meat, sumptuous veg and fluffy roast potatoes. And if you’re done before the sun sets, you can walk it all off afterwards along Little Venice's canals.

Address: 55 Shirland Rd, London W9 2JD

6

The Royal Oak

When you’ve had enough of the crowds out on Columbia Road Flower Market (and spent far more than you should on peonies), duck inside The Royal Oak for one of their legendary Sunday roasts.

A favourite with Alexa Chung, the menu has a twist on the classics – think roast chicken served with fattoush salad and butterflied lamb with beetroot, aubergine, tomato, mint and olive. Fear not though, for traditionalists there’s still a classic roast Hereford beef rump with all the trimmings.

Situated in a grade II listed building on the corner of Columbia Road, the downstairs has cosy wood panelling, while a slightly more refined art deco style dining area is now open upstairs.

Hawksmoor

The best thing about Hawksmoor is that chances are you’re never very far from one. With locations at Air Street, Borough, Knightsbridge, Seven Dials and Spitalfields all serving up delicious roasts, Hawksmoor has become a Londoner’s go-to Sunday lunch hotspot.

There’s no messing around though, it’s one option and one option only – slow roast rump with all the trimmings, including Yorkshire puddings and lashings of bone marrow and onion gravy. Make sure you get your order in early as the roasts are known to sell out.

And if you don’t have room for pudding, order pastry chef Carla Henrique’s salted caramel Rolos to take away.

8

The Marksman

For something a little different from meat, tatties and two veg, head east to The Marksman on Hackney Road where we love the idea of tucking into their sharing plates with a friend. The chicken and girolle pie for two and the pot roast Tamworth belly with sausage and baked beans, also made for two, sounds like our kind of comfort food. We’re already dreaming about topping it all off with the brown butter and honey tart.

While downstairs you’re greeted with a classic old school pub complete with dark wood panelling, chalk boards and rickety bar stools, venture upstairs and you’ll find a playfully designed airy and open dining space – choose depending on your mood.

9

The Pig and Butcher

The Pig and Butcher has become something of a north London institution. Get comfortable on the mismatched chairs and order from their extensive menu – which, because they butcher on site, changes daily depending on what’s been delivered. Vegetarians and pescatarians fear not, non-meat options are anything but an afterthought – think heritage squashes and Portobello mushrooms and whole Atlantic plaice.

This is also the place to go to if you’re in a big group. Dine in the private dining area where the homely interiors wouldn’t feel out of place in a country farmhouse, with a red and white chequered table runner and pheasants (we can't confirm whether they're real or not) hang above an Aga. And the feasting menu is truly a sight to behold, all served on vintage platters ‘farmhouse style’.

Clapton Country Club

Forget book clubs, head over to Clapton Country Club to experience their Sunday Roast Club, where their great tasting roasts are complemented by biodynamic wine and artisan beer.

Situated in an old tram shed, the décor is all exposed brickwork and reclaimed materials. While tucking into your biodynamic roast (that refers to produce farmed according to the biodynamic calendar), sit back and listen to the sound of live jazz and blues – what more could you want from a Sunday afternoon?

Blacklock

Serving up award-winning roasts ‘almost as good as Mum’s’ is Blacklock. A renowned chop house during the week, on Sundays they turn their attention to the humble roast. Choose between mouth-watering dishes of beef, lamb or pork all served with the classic trimmings, including duck fat-roast potatoes – is there any other way to do them? And make sure you leave just a little bit of room for the signature white chocolate cheesecake.

Head to the original Blacklock location in Soho, where you’ll sit in the basement of an old brothel, and wash your roast beef down with a glass (or three) of one of their excellent wines on tap. Alternatively, East Londoners can dine at the Shoreditch location, an old furniture factory where the cocktails come courtesy of New York bar Slowly Shirley.

12

The Camberwell Arms

We love the ceremony of tucking into a roast sharing platter with friends and The Camberwell Arms’ versions are worth venturing south of river for. Grab your mates and settle in for a spit roast herb-fed chicken, slow roasted spring lamb or dry aged Hereford onglet, not forgetting the roast Sicilian aubergine for any vegans at the table.

Classic, clean interiors allow for the food to take centre stage, not that it needs any help. Not ones to over complicate things unnecessarily, Sunday’s dishes focus on simple, bold and fresh flavours.

The Princess of Shoreditch

The Princess of Shoreditch

Widely know as one of the best pubs in East London - for its comforting pub feel, but Michelin-style plates - The Princess of Shoreditch brings an unrivalled Sunday roast.

On Sundays, the first floor formal dining room and quintessential British pub downstairs join forces to offer a two or three-course roast dinner by Great British Menu finalist, Ruth Hansom.

It’ll feel like Christmas when you start with the ham hock terrine or refined treacle cured Loch Etive Trout with salt baked beetroot, avocado purée and orange. For mains, only the highest quality British meat are served, including Yorkshire Dales sirloin of beef and Norfolk black chicken, of course, alongside rich gravy, a Yorkshire pudding and unlimited seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes. For the veggies, heritage carrot and leek Wellington will suit nicely. Plus, the cauliflower cheese will make your taste buds soar - there’s even the option to add truffle for the bougie among us. You won’t want to skip on the pudding either, experimental touches include caramelised banana ice cream and passion fruit soufflé.

The Castle

A traditional and cosy pub in Walthamstow Village, E17's The Castle is the perfect place to wind down after a heavy weekend, with live piano music and dogs welcome.

For starter's, we suggest tucking into a plate of it's much-adored scotch egg with caramelised onion and feasting on the roast belly of pork with apple sauce or vegetarian nut roast with vegetarian gravy. But remember to leave room for desert because there's lemon and raspberry cheesecake and chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and ice cream that are sure to put you into the snuggest of food comas.

Coal Rooms

If you’re looking for something a little different to the traditional pub setting, Coal Rooms in Peckham is the answer. The clean, minimalist décor is slick and unfussy, which makes the Sunday roasts even more stand-out.

Opt for the 40 day-aged Hereford sirloin and smoked chuck or the Welsh lamb smoked shoulder. For vegetarians, there’s a delicious coal-roasted cauliflower with vegetable gravy – there’s no reason non-meat eaters should be denied gravy. And there aren’t many Sunday lunch spots where you can precede your roast with a starter of tacos – filled with pea, broad bean, fermented chilli and mint chimichurri sauce. Table for two, please.

Why not take things up a notch with a visit to Kricket’s Brixton outpost where you can feast on an Indian-style roast.

The Sunday lunch menu works on a weekly rotation of meaty and veggie roasts, but your choices could include tempting dishes such as keralan beef rump cap, kashmiri lamb leg or kasundi broccoli. The trimmings include curry leaf potatoes, jaggery glazed parsnips and tandoori hispi cabbage.

We’re sold. In fact, we’ve even bought the cookbook to recreate some of the dishes at home.

Bringing everything that’s loved about Tom Kerridge’s iconic Marlow pub, The Hand & Flowers, to London, the Corinthia London Hotel now houses Kerridge’s Bar & Grill. Expect a mean Sunday roast using their bespoke rotisserie grill.

The Sunday lunch menu has Kerridge’s signature style running through it, from the pigs cheek pie with clotted cream mash to the whole haggis stuffed quail. But fear not, the less adventurous still have classic options such as dry aged rib of beef or stuffed chicken with braised chicory.

Sabor

Sabor
Chris Terry

It’s not often you can get a Sunday roast at a Michelin starred restaurant, and even rarer to enjoy some Spanish flair at the same time. But Mayfair’s Sabor serves up unbelievably tender suckling pig with seriously good crackling cooked in their rotating oven – considered a jewel in Castilian cuisine. Or try the roast lamb accompanied by piles of patatas fritas topped with rosemary cheese – Yorkshire pudding who?

While you wait, admire Sabor’s ornate Moorish style tiling and exposed rustic brickwork interiors, and snack on the delicious tapas dishes of boiled Galician octopus, skate wing and rice black pudding with Basque sausage and egg. You might never go back to a traditional roast again.
