Over the years, the Super Bowl has evolved into an event that even those without the faintest idea of or interest in American Football can enjoy. It's become a huge part of American, and consequently global, pop culture.

And that's largely because of two things: Firstly the half time performances, like the Beyoncé-bowl of 2013 or Katy Perry's left shark extravaganza of 2015, but secondly due to the half time adverts.

For those who don't get to watch the Super Bowl live in the US with American commercials (and have to catch up on YouTube the next day instead), the commercial breaks between the Super Bowl - aka the biggest game in the National Football League (NFL) - are the most coveted for advertisers.

The Super Bowl is the most-watched event in the US, with 115 million people tuning in for last year's Super Bowl match between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. According to Reuters, on average a Super Bowl commercial cost $7 million (£5.5m) for a 30 second clip during this year's event (where Usher headlined the half time slot along with cameos from Alicia Keys and H.E.R).

For your throwback viewing pleasure, here are some of the best Super Bowl commercials you might have missed from over the years - featuring Drake, Amy Schumer and Michael B Jordan.

youtubeView full post on Youtube

Poking fun at her uncanny ability to break the internet, Beyoncé appeared in an advert during the 2024 Super Bowl for mobile phone provider Verizon, before going onto announce news that, well, broke the internet: Queen Bey's long-rumoured follow-up album to Renaissance is finally on its way. Even better? As the advert, which Bey was paid a rumoured $30 million (£24 million) for, highlights, this isn't just any old Beyoncé album. No, in fact, the Cuff It star is going back to her Southern roots and releasing a country album, with two songs from the album, Texas Hold 'Em and 16 Carriages, available to stream now.

Recreating that memorable Rolls-Royce scene from David Beckham's recent Netflix documentary, 'Posh and Becks' have starred in a hilarious Uber Eats advert, which will premiere at this year's Super Bowl. Set yourself a reminder,' reads the YouTube description of the clip. Be honest, Victoria...

2023: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez for Dunkin' Donuts

Now we understand the news that Ben Affleck was spotted working at a Dunkin' Donuts earlier this year... It was all in the name of an epic Super Bowl ad, duh! It turns out that Dunkin' Donuts actually put Ben Affleck behind the counter at one of its drive-thru cafés for the ad, and filmed customers' hilarious and bewildered reactions – including Affleck's wife J-Lo, who asks 'Is this what you do when you say you're going to work all day?' Genius.

2023: Ben Stiller for Pepsi

With Noughties nostalgia at an all-time high, it follows that 2023's Super Bowl ads seem to be all about the iconic throwback. Cher Horowitz is officially back, and we couldn't be more delighted. Ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl, which takes place on Sunday 12 February, the first slew of half-time commercial teasers have started to be released – and Rakuten's is already up there with some of the most iconic of all time.

Twenty-seven years after Clueless first hit cinemas, Alicia Silverstone has reprised her lead character Cher Horowitz for the ad – yellow-and-black check skirt suit, shopping bags, bubble gum and all.

2021: Timothée Chalamet for Cadillac

Another A-Lister added to the roster of Super Bowl commercials this year is Timothée Chalamet. Given a 2021 redesign, the Little Women star portrays the son of Edward Scissorhands, originally depicted by Johnny Depp in the hit 1990 movie. Another treat for fans of the film is that Winona Ryder reprises her character of Kim Boggs more than 30 years later.

In the commercial, for motor brand Cadillac, Chalamet plays son of Edward and Kim, Edgar Scissorhands, and gets into the same troubles as his father: attracting to all things metal, deflating an American football and butchering a meal in his part-time job, until... he drives a new electric Cadillac with no hand-steering required.
