If you're having an emotional day, you may want to sit down for this one because it might push you over the edge.

According to Hank Azaria, the actor who played Phoebe's science-obsessed former love interest David, there was an alternate Friends ending where Phoebe ended up with him and not with Mike.

What is this madness?

In an interview with the Huffington Post, the actor explains the writers never intended for Phoebe to choose Mike.

'I didn't know that was the end of David. The plan always was kind of to bring him back,' says Azaria.

So, why the change?

'I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill,' he continued.

That makes sense.

Despite an appearance when David returns from his science research in Minsk, Azaria was upset that Phoebe and his character wouldn't eventually end up together.

'Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me [laughs], but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn't,' he said.

But it sounds like Azaria doesn't have any hard feelings towards his television rival.

'He certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe's love.

'He's a handsome devil. He's actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn't really be allowed to be that handsome. He's like the Tom Brady of comedy,' he continued.

Sorry Hank, but what's meant to be…
