In a nutshell: Ultra-hip bands and uber-cool people. Pitchfork has been uniting urban trendsetters from across the globe since the festival's birth in Chicago in 2006. This event takes place in Grande Halle Villette in Paris; a beautiful old abattoir. The two main stages alternate so you don't miss any of the action. Unknown Mortal Orchestra played last year - it was one of my favourite ever shows. M.I.A headlines this year, Bat For Lashes and Warpaint are also on the bill.

Go if: you are a discerning muso and have nice shoes that you don't want to ruin in the mud.

The USP: There are lots of secret after-parties to discover that take you into Paris's hidden nightclubs and into the early hours of the next day.

In a nutshell: City festival in Spain's beautiful northern industrial port city, Bilbao, surrounded by green mountains

Go if: you are a discerning electro head. PJ Harvey, Chemical Brothers and Moderat all feature on the bill as well as new singer/producer Kevin Garrett who wrote a single on Beyonce's album and has famous fans such as Sam Smith and Katy Perry

USP: Check out the pintxos bars

In a nutshell: A brand new metropolitan festival launches in London this year, bringing the best of the well-known seaside Brighton festival into the heart of Shoreditch.

Go if: you want to check out the best, up-and-coming musical talent before anyone else. Highlights include SHELLS and Fil Bo Riva.

The USP: If you are a Londoner like me - it's on our doorstep.

In a nutshell: Bjork is headlining this year's edition - an amazing artist playing in her own country. Along with brilliant headliners, the festival always showcases the best local acts so you're bound to discover new talent that you have never seen before. Check out the incredible and quirky new female duo, Let's Eat Grandma.

Go if: You want an adventure

The USP: As well as the festival, Reykjavík is an spectacular place to go and explore. Geysers, blue lagoons and other-worldly landscapes are three good reasons to go. Just remember to pack your bobble hat and gloves.

In a nutshell: An epic party in the snowy mountains of Mayrhofen, Austria. Its venues include an igloo rave and enchanted forest party. The bill is usually topped with some big names, brilliant soul music collective Jungle played last year.

Go if: you're an avid skier but even more so if you are an accomplished après -skier
