As Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter tie the knot, revisit one of ELLE's favourite wedding how-tos: how to throw wedding in the style of John Watson's in Sherlock (sans all the killing, of course).

January 2014. It was a TV wedding ceremony to remember. After watching the Twittersphere go into a frenzy (‘Where was the venue?’ ‘Who designed the dress?’ ‘Benedict Cumberbatch in a suit. OMG!’) we decided to put our own Sherlock-inspired investigative skills to the test. Here’s all the knowledge needed to help you create your very own Sherlock-inspired wedding.

THE BRIDE

Or rather… THE DRESS. Handmade by London-based wedding dress designer Jane Bourvis, the dress was simple yet intricate with gorgeous antique lace detailing. Bourvis - whose treasure trove wedding dress shop is tucked away near to Portobello Road - is known for her pretty vintage-inspired designs and delicate handwork. There’s something <very> romantic about a bespoke wedding piece.

THE GROOM & BEST MAN

We weren’t surprised to see Watson and Sherlock sporting a matching grey morning suit and waistcoat combo complete with a light grey top hat. The detective duo looked delightfully dapper in their traditional-style wedding attire – the perfect complement to Mary’s vintage inspired dress.

While we couldn’t pin point the exact designer behind the pair’s wedding suits, we do know that Benedict Cumberbatch is a renowned fan of London-based suit maker Spencer Hart who specialise in stylish, tailor made suits. He’s been spotted sporting their custom made suits in the earlier series of Sherlock as well as to awards ceremonies.

THE VENUE

Known for its picturesque surroundings and pretty interiors, the gorgeous Orangery at Goldney Hall in Bristol provided the perfect setting for the marriage of Watson and Mary. We were particularly fond of the room décor where Sherlock’s infamous best man speech took place…

Other Sherlock-esque venues we’ve spotted include Miskin Manor in Cardiff and St Audries Park in Somerset.
