Netflix's Baby Reindeer began as a one-man show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in 2019, and since its television adaption's release on April 11, it has become the number one most-watched show on the platform, in over 30 countries.

The gripping drama, which was created by comedian Richard Gadd, who stars in the show as a fictionalised Donny, follows his real-life experience of getting stalked by a woman named Martha Scott (played by Jessica Gunning.)

The series begins in 2015 while Donny is working at a pub in Camden named the The Heart. After spotting Martha walk in and sitting by herself, his unexplained pity towards her leads him to offering her a cup of tea 'on the house'.

A gesture so simple and small is essentially the beginning of it all. Immediately, as Donny is left unnerved by Martha's inappropriate and disturbing behaviour, her obsession with him spirals far out of control and spans to nightmarish lengths.

'It’s all emotionally 100% true, if that makes sense. It’s all borrowed from instances that happened to me and real people that I met,' Gadd stated in an interview with Variety.

The writer also discussed the complexities of the experience, both on his part and Martha's, 'As much as it is an examination of stalking and abuse and love and loneliness, I really wanted it to be an examination of the ramifications of trauma.'

Has Baby Reindeer been renewed for a season 2?

As Baby Reindeer is a limited series, the creation of the show was made with a finalised ending. However, given it's major success, it has done more than enough to prove that it's worth a second.

It wouldn't be the first limited series to be renewed for a second season - HBO's The White Lotus, Big Little Lies and Netflix's The Watcher all gained second seasons after garnering high ratings and fans.

'The show was commissioned by Netflix in April 2021 and here we are three years later (almost to the day) ready to release the exact same themes to the world,' Gadd commented. 'The exact same moral quandaries. Only this time, on a much larger scale. In a lot more detail. To a wider spectrum of people and an audience two-hundred million times the size.'

We'll be keeping our eyes peeled for a possible second season and will be updating this article when we learn more.
