No, you’re not experiencing a bad bout of déjà vu. The year is 2024 (not 2020) and, after clinching their parties’ nominations ahead of the US presidential election in November, former president Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden are once again set for a political re-match to fight for control of the White House.

President Biden and Trump both secured the delegates necessary to clinch their parties’ presidential nominations yesterday, according to the Associated Press. This is no small feat for America, either: this is the first time there’s been a presidential re-match in nearly 70 years, the last time being in 1956.

Despite concerns about his age (81), Biden has faced little opposition in the Democratic primaries, while Trump has largely dominated Republican efforts with his only contender, former United Nations US ambassador, Nikki Haley, ending her bid for the Republican nomination last week after winning just one state on Super Tuesday.

In a statement, president Biden said he was honoured that Democratic voters 'have put their faith in me once again to lead our party — and our country — in a moment when the threat Trump poses is greater than ever.'

Trump, meanwhile, took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to share a statement upon learning of his nomination. ‘It is my great honour to be representing the Republican Party as its Presidential Nominee,’ Trump wrote. ‘Fear not, we will not fail,’ he told his supporters, ‘we will take back our once great Country, put AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. November 5th will go down as the most important day in the history of our Country! GOD BLESS AMERICA.'

While precedent dictates that neither candidate will be officially announced until their respective parties' conventions later this summer, polling has recently indicated that Americans are largely dissatisfied with the prospect of another showdown between Trump and president Biden.

The news comes amid mounting legal woes for Trump, as he faces criminal indictments across New York, Florida, Georgia and Washington. If just one of these judicious efforts proves successful, America could see a former president behind bars for the first time.

The US presidential election will be held on November 5, 2024.
