What does an eminent designer to wear to receive an honour from the Queen?

Stella McCartney set a chic yet on-trend precedent today in a bespoke navy suit and shoes of her own design, set off with a vintage platinum Cartier brooch worn as a headpiece, to receive the Officer of the British Empire (OBE) Award at Buckingham Palace.

The designer’s work in dressing Team GB at last year’s triumphant London 2012 Olympic Games is understood to have been a factor in her naming in the New Year’s Honours List, on which she was joined by a number of the Games’ stars: Bradley Wiggins, Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Ellie Simmonds.

Stella’s husband, Alasdhair Willis, was on hand today to lend both moral and sartorial support in a perfectly coordinating double-breasted navy wool suit and polka-dot tie.

The OBE joins a host of trophies already in the designer’s cabinet – not least her Designer of the Year and Designer Brand of the Year from the 2012 British Fashion Awards and her ELLE Style Award for International Designer of the Year.

Congratulations from ELLE!
