Half of the magic of make-up happens in the product, the other half is how you use it. The best place to learn the best tricks? Backstage at fashion week, where the top hair and make-up artists practice their craft on supermodels, of course.

Although hair piled with fresh flowers and yellow blusher might be the attention-grabbing looks from SS19, backstage the real secrets to nailing runway-worthy hair and make-up is all in the subtlety.

1. How to nail the lived in mascara look

Subtle styling trick no.1:

Backstage at Zimmermann, make-up artist Jodie Boland used Bobbi Brown No Smudge mascara to get an authentically worn-in finish.

Take the tip of the wand and over-apply product on top and bottom lashes, then scrunch the eyes shut and let it imprint on the skin. Remove the bottom smudge and let the top remain, then go over your top lashes only to finesse the look.

Subtle styling trick no.2:

Philip Lim's girls were nomadic and carefree, their mascara was on bottom lashes only - a subtle trick to elongate and define the eye without it looking ‘done’. Make-up artist Francelle Daly used NARS Climax mascara and an eyeliner brush (no.46) to push the exact right amount of product into the lash line.

2. How to create invisible volume

Traditionally it’s been done with product, blow drying and/or backcombing. All of which is entirely visible. The effortless trick according to Eugene Souleiman backstage at Jeremy Scott is to use a pair of hair straighteners like ghd Platinum + on random sections underneath, wrapping the hair to create a gentle wave, then letting the rest of your hair sit naturally on top. Subtle, effective, super cool.

3. How to perfect insta-eyes

The trick seems obvious but it’s the extra photo-perfecting benefit that makes this a must-know tip. At Rodarte, the most photogenic show of the season, make-up artist James Kaliardos prepped his ‘Picasso’ eyes with NARS Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.

Not only does it knock the colour back so anything you put on top (highly recommend the primary colours James used) pops, but it also stops the natural oils in your eyelids making the colour gather in weird places. Aka make-up-perfecting.
