Whether it's for alterations of clothes you already have (for example, you can take up or in your own trousers) or to help with the creation of your very own pieces, learning how to hand sew is a great place to start. In a few weeks, you might even advance so far you'll be considering how to use a sewing machine.

To get a beginner's guide on how to sew, we spoke to the co-founder of Sewn Right, Charlotte Sweet-Williams, to learn the tips and tricks she has picked up over years of sewing.

  1. Cut your thread: When starting, don't worry too much about how much thread to cut, try an arm's length to begin. When you are more advanced, you can use thread consumption guides online to help calculate how much thread you need for what type of stitch.
  2. Thread your needle: Take your needle - the larger the needle the easier it is to thread and grip - and pass your all-purpose thread through the needle's eye. If you struggle getting it through, try wetting the tip of the thread.
  3. Securing a knot: Pull your thread through so it is halved, wrap both threads around your index finger, twist and roll thread off, pull knot and cut off excess thread.
  4. Stitch fabric: There are multiple different stitches to try (see video), but the general idea is always to run your needle and thread through fabric. Start with one piece and move up to folded piece of fabric, or two separate pieces. A simple cotton or felt square is a great place to start.
  5. Tying off: Ensure your thread doesn't unravel by passing your thread through the previous stitch on the underside on your fabric, then back on itself through the loop two or three times creating a knot, then cut off excess thread.

Why Should I Lean To Sew?

'Sewing definitely takes patience but there are just a few simple techniques that are transferable to lots of different projects. If you can master the basics then you will be set to sew anything from cushion covers to a dress.

'It is one of the best feelings in the world being able to make something that no one else has - so unique.'

What Sewing Project Should I Begin With?

'I would start with something simple like a small drawstring pouch or a purse. This project shouldn't be too overwhelming for a beginner but you will still get a great sense of achievement. You can also give your handmade pouch as a cute gift.'

Where Can I Get Good Sewing Tips?

'We regularly do "how to" tutorials on Instagram and quick videos on how to do simple alterations easily from home. YouTube is really great for tutorials, it always helps to see something being made physically that you can follow along and pause as you go.'
