With a new Nineties or Noughties trend re-emerging almost weekly at the moment, it's hardly a surprise that flip flops look poised for a comeback, but can the famously unfashionable shoe really make a return? Michael Kors and Rihanna certainly think so.

On Saturday night, Rihanna showed a collection of flip flops on the Fenty Puma catwalk. They were luxe, they were heeled, but they were unmistakably flip flops.

Anything Rihanna touches blows up (furry sliders case in point) but the return of the flip flop was only confirmed when Michael Kors showed some in his spring/summer 2018 collection last night. His were much more wearable.

Marc Jacobs then also showed something in the flip-flop family in the form of these heavily embellished sandals.

Not a one off, it seems that other brands have also heralded the return of the controversial shoe this season. Dion Lee showed them in a variety of colour-ways and paired them with evening dresses for SS18, while Collina Strada + Assembly New York made a case for them with long flowing skirts.

It is not just the catwalk championing the comeback either. The trend seems to have hit the Scandis and celebrities too – they were spotted on the street style set at Copenhagen Fashion Week, while Heidi Klum wore a pair as she boarded a flight last month.

We'll have to wait and see if the flip flop takes pride of place on any more catwalks this fashion month, but it certainly seems plausible that we'll be slipping into them next summer. Hey, if Crocs, Uggs and Birkenstocks can make a comeback, we should hardly be surprised.
