Updated 19/06/20: Jennifer Lawrence has broken her self-imposed social media ban and gone public on Twitter for the first time.
The 29-year-old has previously admitted to having a private social media account over the years but earlier this week decided to go public on her own verified Twitter account, @JLawrence_RepUs.
On Tuesday, the actress shared her first public tweet to speak out again racial injustice and in support of the organisation Represent Us.
Represent Us is a grassroots organisation dedicated to ‘pursuing federal reform’ and fighting anti-corruption. Lawrence is a Represent US board member with the likes of actor Ed Helms and director Adam McKay.
In her first tweet, Lawrence shared a video of actor Omar Epps talking about the high percentage of imprisoned black men in the US. Her second featured a personal statement from the actress calling for justice following the death of Breonna Taylor.
Taylor died on March 23 at the hands of Louisville Metro Police after her house was wrongly raided by police. The then 26-year-old was shot eight times. No arrests have been made in the case of Taylor and the officers responsible for her death remain employed by the police department.
‘As a Louisvillian, as a human being, I cannot be silent,’ the newlywed actress wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. ‘I join all those who are speaking out against this grave injustice, calling upon Attorney General Daniel Cameron to take immediate action to hold those responsible for her death accountable.
‘We must not allow the erasure of Black women to continue in America,. As many activists and leaders have been imploring for years: #SayHerName.’
Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that, after years of publicly eschewing social media, she is, in fact, on one of the main platforms.
In a new interview with InStyle, the Red Sparrow star dramatically announced that, whilst she’s on social media, she refrains from actively contributing.
‘I’m on it. But I’m a voyeur: I watch, I don’t speak,’ the 28-year-old stated.
She continues: ‘There is always so much backlash. So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything. I really don’t want to welcome that unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want to put myself out there for no reason. Unless I’m promoting something or something really burns my onions, you won’t hear from me.’
Back in 2014, the blonde told BBC Radio 1’s old host Nick Grimshaw that she would never get social media, ‘If you ever see a Facebook, Instagram or Twitter that says it's me, it most certainly is not.’
The star explained, ‘the internet has scorned me so much that I feel like it's that girl in high school that I'm like, "Oh, you want to talk about her? Yeah I'll do that!" Take my hoops off, I'm ready to go.’
