It's no secret that Selena Gomez has a tumultuous relationship with Instagram.

Two years ago, the singer overtook good friend Taylor Swift as the most followed Instagram account, and now has 144 million followers (a lot more than Swift’s current 112m).

The singer has been known to frequently take breaks from the social media app. Yet no one has been able to taker her crown - until now.

Dethroning the reluctant Queen of Instagram is none-other than footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 144,338,650 followers compared to Selena's 144,321,029.

The 33 year-old footballer, unlike Gomez, is a frequent poster, unsing the site to share pictures of his work, family and girlfriend.

Gomez, 26, last posted last month, declaring, ‘ Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember- negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.’

During an Instagram live in September she also spoke of how her social media crown didn’t bother her, ‘I don’t. I don’t care. I could have none tomorrow. Makes no difference. It’s just a number and it’s insane so many people are obsessed with a number. It’s like, chill out.’

Well, at least she won’t mind about the recent news then…
