Netflix's new drama Unbelievable is based on the true story of a teenage girl who was charged with lying about rape.

Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning article by The Marshall Project and ProPublica, An Unbelievable Story of Rape, the eight-part series follows an 18-year-old named Marie who reported being being raped in her apartment by a man who had bound and gagged her.

After being disbelieved by her former foster mother and confronted by police with inconsistencies in her story, she conceded that it may have been a dream, before telling the authorities that she had made it up. Marie was then charged with filing a false report, before accepting a plea deal.

The astonishing true story has also featured in This American Life's three-part podcast Anatomy of Life.

Merritt most recently won an Emmy Award for her role in Netflix's 2018 western Godless, and Toni recently starred in raunchy BBC One drama Wanderlust.
