Zayn Malik’s public 'love you' tweet to Gigi Hadid on March 2 didn’t lead to the two getting back together, Us Weekly reports—and that’s because Hadid knows that she and Malik wouldn’t work. A source told the outlet that 'Gigi and Zayn still talk. She still has feelings for him, of course, but he has major issues and she knows they aren’t compatible. She’s still very single.'

Malik and Hadid were widely reported to have split in January, although some outlets like E! reported that they went on a break two months before, in early November. A source told Us at the time of their January breakup that a reconciliation wasn’t impossible. 'They’re done,' a source told Us at the time. 'They could get back together, but it’s over for now.'

A second source said that Malik and Hadid worked hard at their relationship but ultimately Malik had 'a lot of his own issues that she couldn’t help him get through.' Hadid isolated herself from her friends while trying to help her boyfriend. 'She cut herself off from all her friends every time they were together,' Us’s source said. 'She focused all her time and energy on him, but it just got to be too much.'

Malik and Hadid’s January split was their second. The two initially broke up in March last year after nearly two and a half years of dating. They both released Twitter statements at the time announcing the split. They’d reconcile a month later in April but kept their relationship very private and generally off social media.
