Back in 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt (citing 'irreconcilable differences). Last week, it was announced that the Hollywood heavyweights are no longer married. According to CNN, Jolie and Pitt were granted a dissolution in status only of their marriage.
And now Jolie, the 43-year-old actress, director and humanitarian, has officially dissolved Pitt from her last name.
She added Pitt's name to her surname after the couple married in August 2014. But court papers obtained by ET show that as part of the dissolution of the Hollywood stars' legal union, Jolie's name was officially restored to simply Angelina Jolie.
This is actually the second time Jolie has dropped a last name through a court petition, the online publication reports. In 2002, the actress, who was born Angelina Jolie Voight, petitioned the court to legally drop Voight from her name (she was estranged from her father Jon Voight).
Jolie and Pitt met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith and have six children together: Maddox, 17, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 12 and 10-year-old twins, Vivienne and Knox.
The actress has remained silent on the subject of divorce since their split, but Pitt opened up about their separation in an interview with GQ in 2017.
'We're both doing our best. I heard one lawyer say, 'No one wins in court - it's just a matter of who gets hurt worse',' he said. 'And it seems to be true, you spend a year just focused on building a case to prove your point and why you're right and why they're wrong, and it's just an investment in vitriolic hatred.
'I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids to suddenly have their family ripped apart.'
The court decision allows Jolie and Pitt to no longer be married, while continuing to work out issues such as custody, Atlanta-based divorce attorney Randy Kessler told CNN.
The move to change her name comes as Jolie is readying a return to the big screen in the sequel to Maleficent in October this year, and has previously revealed she is open to a potential future in politics in the US.
Meanwhile Pitt will star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also starring Margot Robbie).
