Donald Trump has denied calling the Duchess of Sussex "nasty" ahead of his UK state visit, despite his comments being recorded.

'I never called Meghan Markle 'nasty',' the US president tweeted on Sunday, adding: 'Made up by the Fake News Media, and they got caught cold!'

Trump made the comments to The Sun newspaper when he was told that Meghan - prior to joining the royal family - had publicly criticised him for his 'misogynistic' and 'divisive' policies in 2016, and threatened to move to Canada if he was sworn in.

During the interview, Trump told the newspaper that it was the first time he'd heard the remarks, saying: 'I didn't know that. What can I say? I didn't know that she was nasty.'

He then said that he was glad she had joined the royal family and he believed she would make a 'very good' princess.

'It is nice, and I am sure she will do excellently,' Trump added.

The Sun posted an audio recording of the interview on its website on Saturday 1 June.

Meanwhile, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have arrived in the UK for their three-day visit.

The US President and his family, including his adult children, will be welcomed by the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in the Buckingham Palace garden. Following the ceremony, the Duke of Sussex will join them for a private lunch while the Duchess of Sussex is opting to stay out of the spotlight. She's currently on maternity leave after welcoming son Archie at the beginning of May.

The next day, the Trumps will be given a tour of Westminster Abbey before enjoying afternoon tea at Clarence House with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. A state banquet will be prepared in the Buckingham Palace ballroom on Monday evening with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge expected to attend.
