Days after Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux announced they'd called time on their two-year-marriage, it's been revealed the couple reportedly spent their last Valentine's Day together at their home in Los Angeles.

E! News reports the day before the couple announced their split via their publicists, the pair - who married at the L.A home in 2015 - met at on the West Coast and made the decision to announce their break-up.

'They had been living separately for the last several months,' a source told the publication exclusively on Sunday.

'He has been in New York the last several weeks getting on with his life. He flew back to L.A. late on Valentine's Day and met up with Jen at a mutually-decided-on location.'

'He very much wanted to release a statement so that he doesn't have to hide or live a lie,' the source said. 'He wants to move on with his life and be out in the open.'

The source added that the day after Valentine's Day, Theroux left Los Angeles and went on a weekend trip.

The news comes days after it was rumoured a major factor in the pair's split was their disagreement about where they should live.

A source told Entertainment Tonight that Theroux considers himself a New Yorker through and through, and previously lived in the Big Apple with his long-term girlfriend Heidi Bivens for 14 years before his meeting Aniston. Even after his marriage to the actress and the move to the West Coast, he kept a Greenwich Village pad in the city.

Sadly, living in Hollywood was something that he never really wanted.

Earlier this month, Architectural Digest featured a cover story about Aniston and Theroux's multi-million Bel-Air mansion, which is located in a gated community.

Regardless of their love for each other, the source said their constant disagreement over where they should live drew a wedge between the pair, which resulted in them living two very different lifestyles.

'They really were a great couple. And they cared a lot about each other. Justin was always really protective of her,' a source told ET. 'They both wanted this to work.'

Last week, Aniston celebrated her 49th birthday with friends in Malibu, who wouldn't help gush about their famous pal.
