When news hit the headlines last month that the Spice Girls were reuniting for a big project, we envisaged world tours, new music and a PVC-clad video to rival their 1996 hit video 'Say You'll Be There'.

So, prepare to share in our heartbreak as we announced that no, the girl band are not coming back with a reunion tour but creating an animated superhero-themed film.

Variety reports each animated character will be voiced by a Spice Girl and feature a 'girl power' unique to that group member that reflects each singer's personality.

I mean, sure, but it's no tour is it? Heck, it's not even a Spice World remake!

While the former bandmates acknowledged that they had met 'to explore some incredible new opportunities together', an insider told the publication that talk of a tour was 'premature' and that no dates have been booked by CAA, the Spice Girls' longtime agency.

However, that doesn't mean the Spice Girls are taking a back seat with this latest project, with a source revealing the five women are 'fired up about the idea' of the film.

'The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They're the most successful girl group on the planet. It's just what Marvel or Disney needs,' the source added.

Last month it was reported that the band would each receive £10m ($14.15m) to promote a new greatest hits album, along with appearances on talent shows and various endorsements.

Victoria Beckham also shared an Instagram post that reunited the members. Earlier this week, Mel B also sparked rumours about a reunion after wearing a jacket emblazoned with Spice Girls lyrics.

'We are always overwhelmed at how much interest there is across the whole world for the Spice Girls,' the group said last month in a statement. 'The time now feels right to explore some incredible new opportunities together.'

We're still holding out for a tour at some point, ladies. You have been warned.
