Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Emma Watson Lead The Outcry Over Alabama's Anti-Abortion Bill
Under the new law, abortion will illegal in almost every circumstance
A plethora of celebrities are rallying their followers and fans after Alabama passed the most restrictive abortion legislation in the United States.
Earlier this week, 25 white male senators voted to outlaw abortion in the state in virtually all circumstances, the only exception being if a woman's life is in danger (meaning rape and incest are excluded).
One day later, the state's governor Kay Ivey signed the bill into law. The architects of the bill reportedly accept the law will face legal challenges at a local court level but hope this means it will be elevated to the Supreme Court, where they want the historic 1973 Roe vs Wade ruling (which protects a women's right to an abortion) to be overturned.
The Planned Parenthood branch in the south east of the US called the decision a 'dark day for women in Alabama and across the country' and particularly attacked the clause of the bill which will sentence a doctor to 99 years imprisonment if they perform an abortion procedure.
Many women's rights campaigners have been venting their anger and fears on social media. A huge host of celebrities have joined this chorus by sharing statements and messages to their millions of fans calling for action for anyone who ultimately believes women should have autonomy over their bodies.
