It's official - make-up is back.

After what felt like endless seasons of 'barely there' foundation and 'I woke up like this' undone hair (looks that roughly translate into our Monday morning routine as 'woke up late, haven't had coffee'), the benevolent fashion leader that is Karl Lagerfeld has gifted us with an actual beauty look.

In fact, Chanel Couture SS19 ditched the tired theme of unachievable nonchalance for what we're dubbing as this season's most OTT hair and make-up. Enter the '80s New Romantic/French Rococo Make-Up Mash-Up.'

Transporting guests from the snowy streets of Paris outside, to the latest reincarnation of the Grand Palais, the Villa Chanel, inside, this season's couture show set the scene for a tropical French paradise with a Bowie-meets-Marie Antoinette twist.

Think satin puff ball skirts, power shoulder pads and pastel frills straight out of Pretty In Pink, alongside feather bustles and hooped skirts, all topped off with a whispy wedge of hair and neon coral lipstick.

Channelling an unexpected, but no less fantastical, middle ground between Marie Antoinette's infamous sky-scraping wigs and the New Romantic penchant for 'electrocuted' swept-up hair was backstage legend Sam McKnight.

McKnight finished the rebellious look with a generous spritz of his Hair By Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray and a cluster of prim feathered flower hair slides.

Adding an extra layer of 80s to the proceedings was Chanel's Global Creative Make-Up And Colour Designer, Lucia Pica. It was out with the mascara-free lashes and au natural skin, and in with eyes heavily ringed with inky turquoise liner and slicks of neon bright red lipstick.

A narrow slice of bare skin between models' upper and lower lids gave an extra nod to Boy George-esque extreme sculpted make-up.

As Marie Antoinette might say, 'More is more, and less is a bore.' She totally would say that...
