Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in 'Big Little Lies'pinterest

It was a very good day on set when Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon shared the empowering realisation that they are their own bosses.

Kidman was speaking about life on the Big Little Lies set during the Time 100 Gala in New York last night, where she was being honoured by the publication as one of the world's most influential people.

'It was funny, we were in the car the other day shooting a scene, and there were some guys hanging out over the balcony, and they're like, "Hey, come on up," and we were like, "We're shooting our scene right now, you've gotta talk to our boss",' the award-winning star told ET.

'And then Reese and I looked at each other and went, "We are the boss!"'

Both Witherspoon and Kidman serve as executive producers on the hit HBO series, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty of the same title, as well as starring as Madeline and Celeste respectively.

The stars are reprising their roles for the hotly anticipated second season, with Witherspoon recently sharing a behind-the-scene photo on Instagram of the pair with the latest addition to the already-impressive cast - a dog named Jolly.

'Introducing Jolly. He has the best hair of all the cast!!' the actress captioned the shot.

Meanwhile, Big Little Lies will also be welcoming the hugely-anticipated arrival of Meryl Streep. The legendary Hollywood star will be playing the mother of the late Perry (previously played by Alexander Skarsgard).

Following rumours that Lenny Kravitz would be starring as Bonnie's father - played by Lenny's real-life daughter Zoe Kravitz - it was instead revealed that Martin Donovan would be taking on the role (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Shailene Woodley will be reprising her role as Jane, and Laura Dern will be back as Renata. It was also recently confirmed that Adam Scott would be returning as Witherspoon's on-screen husband Ed, and Kathryn Newton will be reprising her role as Madeline's rebellious teenage daughter Abigail.

Big Little Lies will be returning to HBO later this year.
