Claire Foy has said that the aftermath following the recent revelation that she was paid less than her co-star, Matt Smith on The Crown has 'opened [her] eyes'. The actress was speaking at CinemaCon this week and opened up about what she called an 'embarrassing' incident.

'I certainly won’t be naïve about those things,' Foy said. 'It’s really opened my eyes about what I am allowed to have an opinion about, and what I’m allowed to stand up for myself about. And I think that’s really changed my approach to myself and other women in this industry. It’s been only a positive thing — even though, embarrassing.'

The revelation came to light during a panel conversation last month for The Crown when producers were asked point blank if Smith was paid more than Foy.

They argued that Smith had a bigger pull when the two were hired due to his fame with Doctor Who. However, the fact that Foy clearly played the lead role in the Netflix drama and was one of the main reasons behind the show's success left audiences feeling extremely shocked and understandably angry.

Left Bank Pictures – the company responsible for the production of the show and for all budgets and salaries – took complete blame for the situation and apologised to both Foy and Smith.

An apology is not enough however, according to Jared Harris, who played King George on the show.

'I understand they made an apology but, you know, an apology and a cheque would be more welcome,' Harris told Digital Spy. 'She worked longer hours. Her performance is a huge reason why this thing is going to have a season three, four, five, and six... send her a paycheque and, in retrospect, bring her pay up to parity.'

Although it has not been confirmed that Foy ever received more money, a statement made by Smith this week may suggest that this was done.

'Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe that we should be paid equally and fairly and there should be equality for all,' he told The Hollywood Reporter. 'I support her completely, and I'm pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because that what's needed to happen.'
