Since The Crown hit our television screens in 2016, we've been caught up in the dramatic romances between the show's famous royal protagonists.

But it appears its star Claire Foy has struggled with her own private dramas behind the scenes.

In an interview with the Sun, the 33-year-old actress revealed that her husband, actor Stephen Campbell, battled a brain tumour as she filmed the second season of the Netflix show.

The star, who was pregnant with her first child during filming for season one and just gave birth to a second child, said: 'My daughter didn't know what was going on at all. But my family did and I could see it in them.

'You realise you're not the most important person in that process, and everybody who loves you goes through far worse,' she added.

The actress, who just won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for her role as Queen Elizabeth II, admitted she struggled to cope with her filming duties and not knowing whether she would be widowed.

Campbell was diagnosed with a benign tumour on his pituitary gland at the base of the brain at the end of 2016. He has since made a full recovery following a successful operation.

The couple met while Claire was making her first film, the 2011 fantasy Season of the Witch, and married in 2014.

The news came years after Foy suffered her own health scare. At the age of 17, the Manchester-born actress battled a benign eye tumour for a year, which encouraged her to follow her dreams of becoming a star.

'It made me realise that I needed to grab the life I wanted,' she said.

Foy has now left The Crown to pursue other projects while the role of the Queen is being taken over in season three by actress Olivia Coleman.
