Meghan Markle has given birth to her daughter.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed the news on Sunday, June 6 stating: 'It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.'

'Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40 a.m. in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.

'This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family.'

In a message on the couple's Archewell website, they write: 'On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.

'She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe.

'Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.'

The child - who is now Her Majesty's 11th great-grandchild ad eight in line to the throne - has the same surname as her brother, Archie, in keeping with the Duke of Sussex's family tradition.

Royal fans will notice the importance of the tot's name.

What is the meaning behind Meghan Markle's baby name?

After all, the Queen's name is Elizabeth but it's well known that her family have long called her 'Lilibet' for short. It's believed her father, King George VI, once said: 'Lilibet is my pride. Margaret is my joy.'

Despite numerous reports claiming the Queen wasn't consulted by the couple about their daughter's name, a spokesperson for the Sussexes reportedly told The Telegraph on June 9: 'The Duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement, in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called.

'During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.'

According to the Familyeducation.com the name Elizabeth, which 'Lilibet' derives from, has origins in Herbew and has several meanings including 'My God is an oath', 'My God is abundance', and 'pledged to God'. Meanwhile, Diana is Greek origin and means 'divine'.

The child's middle name is in honour of Prince Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, who lost her life in 1997 in Paris following a car accident.

Archie, the tot's older brother who was born in 2019, was born without a royal title. Therefore, it's likely the royal couple's newborn daughter will similarly not have a title, however this is yet to be confirmed by their representatives.

Given the child's birth place, 'Lili' as she's now know will be entitled to American and British citizenship due to her birth place and father's.

On the Archewell website, the couple have asked for well wishers wanting to send gifts to 'support or learn more about these organisations working for women and girls: Girls Inc., Harvest Home, CAMFED or Myna Mahila Foundation'.

'While the Duke and Duchess are on parental leave, Archewell will continue to do important work and publish stories on the site. We look forward to seeing you!' it concluded its message.
