A Kensington Palace statement said Catherine and her new son are 'both doing well'

William was present for the birth, the palace added. The statement added that members of both families had been informed and were 'delighted with the news'.

A large Union Jack Flag has been raised over Buckingham Palace and a State Standard over Windsor Castle to mark the birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's third child.

The Duchess of Cambridge was taken by car before 6am this morning to the private Lindo wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.

In a statement, Kensington Palace revealed: 'Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, earlier this morning in the early stages of labour.

'The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.'

The news comes months after the royal couple announced they were expecting their third child.

'The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news,' read a statement about the pregancy, issued from the Palace on 4 September.

The announcement of Kate's pregnancy also mentioned that she was suffering from Hyperpremesis Gravidarum, as she previously did during the pregnancies with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Middleton – who has recently sported some beautiful pregnancy looks – made her first public appearance after the third baby announcement at reception at Buckingham Palace in honour of World Mental Health Day on 10 October.

A week later, the Palace divulged that Kate Middleton was due sometime in April 2018, just before Princess Charlotte's third birthday and a month before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding.

Kate and Will refrained from revealing their baby's gender but bookmaker William Hill has been betting on another girl for couple for several months.

The bookie had set royal baby names odds at 3/1 for Mary, with Alice close behind at 6/1, Victoria at 10/1 and Elizabeth at 14/1.

The third royal maybe is now fifth in line to the British throne thanks to the 2013 passing of the Succession to the Crown Act which ended the system of male preference primogeniture, which had been in place since the Act of Settlement of 1701.

The law came into effect in 2015, meaning Princess Charlotte would remain fourth in line to the crown whether she got a younger brother or a younger sister in April.

The birth of the third royal baby also means that Prince Harry has moved down to become sixth in line.

We can't wait to see what the little one looks like!
